Lux Radio Theater

Drama based on popular films

Broadcast History:

Hosts:  John Anthony, fictionalized as "Douglass Garrick," 1934-35;  Cecil B. DeMille,   June 1, 1936-Jan. 22, 1945; transition hosts including Lionel Barrymore, Walter Huston, William Keighley, Mark Hellinger, Brian Aherne, and Irving Pichel, most of 1945;   William Keighley, 1945-52;  Irving Cummings, 1952-55.
Cast:  Major motion picture stars, sometimes as many as four in a single broadcast:  Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, Spencer Tracy, Bette Davis;   virtually every headliner in Hollywood.  Radio performers in supporting roles:   Frank Nelson, Earle Ross, Lou Merrill, Margaret Brayton, Florence Lake, Bill Johnstone, Jeff Chandler, etc.
Announcers:  Melville Ruick beginning with the first broadcast from Hollywood;  John Milton Kennedy beginning in the early 1940s and for most of that decade;  Ken Carpenter in later years.

The Lux Radio Theater was the most important dramatic show in radio.  It had the biggest stars, the highest budgets, the most acclaim.  It had a full hour and, during its heyday, Hollywood's most prominent film director as host.  It had an austere sound, almost solemn.   As Tune In noted in 1943:  when Cecil B. DeMille opened the broadcast with his weekly "Greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen," it almost sounded like "This is God, speaking from heaven."

The show had arrived in Hollywood in 1936, luring Marlene Dietrich and Clark Gable to its microphones and drawing an audience that was estimated as high as 40 million people.  It had arrived just ahead of the mass migration of stars and shows from New York and Chicago, staked its ground, and stood off all challengers to the throne.  Lux was power on a scale that even movie people found intimidating.  This was not a show to be indulged, perhaps,  when shooting schedules permitted: when The Lux Radio Theater called, shooting schedules were abandoned.  Entire movie companies stood idle while stars rushed off for radio rehearsals.  A top star could collect $5,000 for a 60-minute appearance, but the power was far deeper than that.  Producers knew that when a film was dramatized on Monday night, it automatically translated into big box office.

It had begun modestly, as a lukewarm anthology of the Broadway stage, heard on Sunday afternoons.  The first broadcast was Seventh Heaven, with Miriam Hopkins.  Though the New York run occasionally used similar plays from Hollywood, the main focus was on such dramas as What Every Woman Knows (Helen Hayes) and Mrs. Dane's Defense (Ethel Barrymore).   The initial guiding principle was simple:  "Buy the rights to a fine glay, hire the biggest names available, and hope the public will listen."  But competition for big names was fierce in New York.  When film stars came east -- usually on a train between movies, en route to Europe-they were mobbed by agents seeking their appearances on the big variety shows.  An appearance on The Rudy Vallee Hour or Shell Chateau paid more and was less demanding -- a bit of fluff between musical selections, which an actor could learn in a single rehearsal.  The demand for top stars was so desperate that Lux scouts created devious ways of snaring them.  One "bright young fellow,"  as described by Radio Guide, simply grabbed up Leslie Howard's suitcases and led him through a gauntlet of competing agents to a waiting cab.  Only when they were settled in the car did it occur to Howard to ask who he was.  "I'm from The Lux Radio Theater, and you're going to act for us tomorrow night,"  said the brash young fellow.  He had caught (and subsequently booked) a hot young star by knowing that "a man will always follow his suitcases."
